Start off by identifying the title of the essay, its author, historical background, general situation of the essay, and the central idea.
All of that will be in your introduction paragraph which you'll end up with a thesis. your thesis will contain elements you'll discuss in the body, each element in each paragraph. The elements in your thesis can include the allusions, symbols, and metaphors in the literary essay. In this case, you'll discuss all the allusions in the essay in the second paragraph.
Discuss all the symbols in the essay in the third paragraph and so on. Remember to write about your opinions about those elements you identify in the work.
Your conclusion would be a summary of your paper.

“A response essay describes our experience with literature—how we are personally affected by the work. The primary intention of a response essay is to share our personal experience, not to argue for a position.”

First, read the book and while reading the book, take notes on the high points in each chapter- when you're done, you'll have a complete synopsis of the book from which to draw your paper.

Just write your views on whatever you have read. It's really simple once you get stareted.
A good idea would be to first make a summary of your reading.
