I don't see the action you took of lowering the room temp would cause the air conditioner to freeze. Probably, the appliance is old, there was no freon, and non-stop operation. With the air conditioner constantly running.your electric bill.must have been high..Maybe your parents expected you to be more mechanical than them But they certainly don't have the right to get mad at you. Probably they are just using you as a scapegoat in displacing their anger and frustrations. Explain to them that just by lowering the temp alone didn't cause it to freeze and hopefully, they would see the light
Recently, our garbage disposal did just that. I guess it was on its last leg and we didn't use it for a prolonged period. Sometimes it's hard for grown-ups to take responsibility for their own actions. .

I suspect you became annoyed and said to youself " I'll show them " and on purpose lowered it to the extreme. Then if you did that and the A/C froze, you can gain good graces by informing that you have it on high authority that the unit needs to be checked. most likely low charge R 22

All I can say if your parents asked you politely, then I would do what they ask. Some day you shall age gracefully, and ask your kids to do the same.

My mom has arthritis and can't get up as quick as I do, so I am happy to help.

you should respect your parents. When you became one, then you'll understand what they're talking about. Better yet, you should talk to your parents about this issue in order to resolve it then you will know the answer to your question
