Because while tropical storm was coming up the east coast, there was a high pressure system in the northeast, and high pressure is usually associated with cool, dry weather. and since the tropical storm was not formed in the east coast ,there's no really connection other than a coincidence.

There is no connection...exactly. See Ernesto was coming up the coast around the same time a Cold Front was heading east. Does Cold Fronts tune down tropical systems? No. They actually add more rain fall into the mix, as well as make it like a stationary front (non-moving/slow moving). So, with this said, the cold front passing is the cause for cooler temperatures.

The dynamics and state of the weather pattern across the Eastern US as Ernesto approached included high pressure heading southward from Canada, causing considerably cooler winds off the ocean.
