The other respondents seem to have confused "preceded" with "succeeded".
It appears that their regular right fielder in 1919 (the year before Ruth joined the team) was Sammy Vick. He wasn't much of a player, and hit just .248 that year. 1919 was the only year Vick was a regular player, though he had appeared in a handful of games in 1917 and '18 and stayed in the majors until 1921.
