You have to understand that poetry is about feelings... Usually the extreme ends of feelings. As you said there are those that do put a positive outlook to rap. However, keep in mind that the majority of rap artists, (this includes "small timers" who have not made it big), had tough up bringing... Yes they could focus on the positive instead of the negative, but that is a personal choice. And don't think that rap is all alone. Look at country music, and death metal. There is a joke that asks "What do you get when you play country music backwards?... Your girlfriend forgives you, you find your dog, and you get your truck back."
In other words, all music has it's share of songs that are negative.

P.S. I don't watch music videos... IF I even watch tv, it is something that has content, so I guess the videos can play into affect to how SOME people think of rap... BTW I do enjoy a bit of rap.

The "she's got a big booty" crap usually gets old pretty quick. I don't know about you, but lately most rappers write songs about the same crap. That's true with almost most music genres out there also. I have stopped buying CD's because most new artists out there: rap, metal, alternative, etc. suck. I'll find a good song here and there, so I'll download it, but I'm not going to support any bad artist's products when I find that the product they put out is bad. To recap, rap today sucks because they are repeating what has been done before, and worst, "re-writing" rock songs as rap. Can't they just get creative and sing something original that doesn't have to do with how many times 50cent got shot or how big an @ss is?

Rap is amelodic, or without melody; therefore "rap music" is an oxymoron. Rap is just talking in a rhythm.
And rap glorifies wrongdoing. All the rap I've ever heard (unwillingly, after the first few times) has been about glamorizing the same things: black racism, hatred and revenge, drug dealing and use, domination and mistreatment of women, violence and guns, disrespecting other people, criminality, and worshipping money.
If young people's minds are filled with this moral poison today, what kind of leaders can we expect them to be tomorrow?
That's why I hate rap.

Most people who hate rap only hear what is overplayed on the radio and, for the most part, that DOES suck. With the exception of Outkast and maybe a few others, most rap that gets airplay is just a carbon copy of some hit we don't even remember now. Every now and then, a song like What's Golden or some Common or Mos Def song will get in a commercial and get some attention. And the people who don't like the good rap, well, they just don't understand good music when they hear it.

The industry pushes the crap rap on people and the real hip hop sits on the shelf. however people first need to demand better quality from these artist stop buying the bullshit and then the content will change. not all rap is about drugs violence sex jewels & cars but thats what people want to hear just like all rock is not about worshiping the devil and takin LSD and all country ain't about havin your wife leave shoot the dog & set the pickup on fire different people have different lives but a lot of rappers are being exploited and some are just fake. people need to check themselves first. bullshit sells in the USA change that & the music will change & so will people I like all kinds of music with no bias(except gospel) in the words of George Clinton(Founder of Parliament & Funkadelic or P-Funk) "free yo mind and yo azz will follow"

In my opinion, there are a couple of reasons. First, rap is generally played by loudly (unlike other forms of music) and most people have no choice but to hear it loudly from an adjacent car or other public places. That gets on peoples nerves ....... not so the much the music, but to have to listen to it involuntarily. Secondly, many americans do not consider it a form of art. Some guy on a microphone ranting incoherently does not qualify as art. I could go on but hopefully you get the point.

I hate most of what is force fed to the masses as rap. When in reality the unknowns often have to sell out to make money or be heard. Lyrically Nas beats Jay-Z, but money talks (or the illusion of money in the case of many rappers), because women love money and guys love women, so they imitate what they think will draw women. I love rap and hip hop, but not the sh... pumped on the radio i.e. 50 Cent, Ma$e, and G-Unit. I hate it also when people blast any music when I am relaxing or trying to sleep.

I love rap music. I listen a little of everything but I listen rap mostly. I have no idea why some people hate rap. I guess they can't understand it.

Rap has a negative communication style, generally speaking. Of course there are some exceptions but many rap songs are violent in nature and demean women frequently. The music lacks music, to be blunt. It's quite unmusical and reminds me of my uncle's gas lawn mower in it's beat-I like the beat, by the way--it's just that it doesn't vary much.

i don't like rap because it's like not even real music. its a poem usually about degratting women, having premiscous sex (which usually involves rape), murder, drugs, or some other form of something bad and then they put it to a synthesizer. There's not really much more to it. I mean most rap doesnt even have instruments and if they do they're very limited. I like music with singing (well sometimes grunting, i like heavy metal, but i also like some new rock as well as classic rock), fast pased instrument (like in thrash metal or speed metal or power metal, most types of metal), a nice powerful drum, and a good bass when it's needed. I need more than a poem and a synthesizer. I need talent and actual music that revolves around something more than what most rap revolves around. I mean heavy metal sings about government, social issues, beliefs, and is just so much deeper than rap. Heavy metal isnt really satanic it's just deep and hard and that's what people don't get. But that's a different discussion. But it's deeper than rap and much more instrumental with mor music and talented musicians singing about stuff that matters to them not some chick's *** or smokin pot but about political issues, anger, love, hate, pain, suffering, war, social issuses, humanity as a whole, religion, and so much more. Rap never touches on any of that and when it does it's quick and gone. I need music that relies on their beliefs and not on drugs or sex to get their music sold.
