you can't tell when they are young...you have to wait until they flower....
males will have little teeny tiny bunches of what look like miniature grapes......kill them quick! before they pollinate your females...
females will have two.......tiny white " hairs " growing from each intersecting segment of the plant
you can check them every day with a magnifying glass......when you see the hairs, you're in business!

It depends on what plant you are talking about.....but.........here is an example. The male plant will grow taller, with more space between each set of leaves, while the female will bush out and not have much space between leaves. The male plant will get tiny little white flower clusters (looks like tiny bells), when they are about 18" tall and should be discarded, if you want the female to flower well.............

You can't really tell untill it starts showing. If indoors you can turn the light cycle on 12/12 for a bit untill it shows flowers. If outdoors, you just gotta wait it out. With the indoors one, you can turn the light cycle back to vegetative growth but it'll slow the maturation by a couple weeks. Females will start showing lil white hairs(pistils) after a couple days while male flowers look like little sacks. Oh yeah, growing pot is bad and illegal blah blah, don't do it blah blah. No seriously, don't do it. Cops don't care they just wanna bust on their records;

A male plant will have a small club (playing card) looking preflower with a small stem under it. A female flower is usually a single or double pistil, white and wispy, emerging from an immature calyx.

I don't know at what stage it happens, I believe it's the number of leaves. The male plant is usually used to make rope, hence the term" HEMP". If you germinated seeds out of something you bought, it's a safe bet it's a female plant. If you found it growing in a rural area, like Indiana, that's more than likely hemp........LATER

I usually go to the local police department and ask for the narcotics officer, he is usually very knowledgeable about such things. If the pot isn't planted in a container small enough to carry to the police department, they often will make house calls.
