Who ARE the "Godfathers of Rap"?

That isn't any easy question at all. Most of the Guys that were forming what we know now as "Rap" were "B-Boys". "B-Boys" not only rap, but sing and play instruments (to some degree). These guys were part of B-Boy Crews that basically competed against other crews and didn't really seek out record deals. New Yorkers will tell you that rapping comes from the Jamaican custom of "toasting" by DJ's at their parties in Jamaica.

The earliest, well known guys were Kool Herc and the Herculoids, GrandMaster Flash, GrandMaster Kaz, The Rock Steady Crew, Afrika Bambatta and the Soul Sonic Force among others.

If you had to single out one guy and say "He was the prototype" of what rappers have (evolved?) into you would have to say that guy is Kurtis Blow. Kurtis Blow was one of the first commercially successful rappers to sign a record deal with a major label (Mercury). Kurtis Blow developed other acts EU, The Fat Boys. His music was "radio friendly" and his skill level gave him credibility within the Hip Hope community.

To say that Run DMC are the "GodFathers of Rap" is incorrect. When D.J. Run first came out he was known as "The Son of Kurtis Blow". There is a good reason for this Russell Simmons (DJ Run's older brother/co-founder of Def Jam Records) was Kurtis Blow's manager when Run first came out.

There is not true "Godfather of Rap". All these guys and many other people (women too) represent a "collective concious" in my mind when I think about this music that I have loved since 1978. Schooly D and Blowfly revolutionized "Dirty Rap" and cursing on records, Gil Scott-Heron and the Last Poets laid the foundation Black conciousness in music, Afrika Bambaata revolutionized beats, Rakim and Moe Dee revolutionized ryhme style, Jazzy Jeff (believe it or NOT yes the Fresh Prince D.J. aka Will Smith) revolutionized scratching with Transforming, Grand Master Flash laid the foundation for everything that we know now in terms form, style, panache and flare that we hear in rap. Dr. Dre introduced melody into rap.

All these people and so many others have their place in this music and have made their mark in Rap History with their unique set of abilities. Every evolving style is a response to a style and oftentimes those are hybrids of two or more different styles.

You should listen to X-Ecutioners, Dialated Peoples and true Hip Hop Artist to get a perspective on this whole thing. You should also listen to the Invisible Skratch Picklz

Most of the stuff that you hear that passes for rap today is SO EASY to do it's PATHETIC. All you need is a software program like PropellerHead Reason or Fruity Loops and just write some old uninventive horse mess down and go platinum.

No diss, I'm not mad at anyone getting their money but to act like any fool messing around with JUST these programs is in the same league as Pete Rock, DJ Quik or the Bomb Squad is SMOOTH OUT THEY DAMNED MIND!

Bionic DJ Picc
