It would destroy all life on Earth, but Earth itself would not be destroyed, probably.

On the plus side, there are no asteroids the size of Texas. According to Wikipedia, Texas is a little over 1200 km across. The largest asteroid, Ceres, is about 950 km across. And Ceres has a nice, stable orbit in the asteroid belt. If there was an asteroid the size of Texas we would have discovered it already (well, probably).

Besides, we don't need an asteroid the size of Texas to cause major damage on Earth. One a mere one mile across would be enough to cause world-wide damage.

For some more information, check out NASA's Asteroid and Comet Impact Hazards website: http://impact.arc.nasa.gov/index.cfm
and their related links page.

That would be a mass extinction event. Probably kill off all life on land, and most life in the oceans. Probably lose 98% of all plant and animal species.
