Well, I think that means that you are either exactly or closely to what he wishes he was. Does that mean that is a compliment, that all depends on your perception, but, that is what he is trying to tell you. You are something that he wishes he was, that he always wanted to be or, at least, try to be and what he is not.

You remind him of himself, except he believes you are the opposite of him. Like Clark Kent and Superman. Both the same person, same minds, same hearts, but one was mild and ordinary while the other was assertive and a superhuman.

I'd say it was a compliment. He probably means that you are good at things he is not good at, you know things he doesn't know, etc.
