I was on the injection for 3 years from being 18-21 and it messed me up hormonally to the point where I ended up having a serious deficiency and as a result had to be seen by a specialist to work out why I was so poorly and listless/depressed etc...and in pain. Strangely enough, 6 months after I came off it I was miles better though because the stupid nurses kept putting the injection the same place on my backside every time (the needle is quite large comparably with normal ones in length and diameter) I built up some scar tissue, the lump of which is smaller now, but 5 years on still there. Though you might not react like I did, if it is not for you it takes three months to leave your system whereas the pill stops more or less the day you stop taking it.
BUT.....The important thing you must remember about most types of female contraception is that it might protect you from pregnancy but not STI's and unless you're sleeping with the same person all the time in an exclusive relationship and you trust them, condoms really are the best and only option and even then, they will only help you prevent catching certain ones.
It's not worth risking anything else. Ask for as much advice as possible at the clinic!!!!

The injection was fab for me, best thing I ever did! I got a shot every 3 months, my periods stopped completely (saved a fortune on sanitary products!) and restarted normally again a couple of months after I stopped getting the shots. The doc put me on the nearest equivalent pill for 3 months in case there were side effects - brilliant idea - I had no side effects and obviously went on to the injections. If I had had a reaction it would have been easier to stop taking a daily pill than to suffer for 3 months had I taken the injection from the start. Good luck!
P.S. think the coil is only usually considered for women who have already had kids?

I've had the injection for over two years. I'm very happy with it:-) I have NO period and it is the most effective birth control there is (next to abstinence)... I haven't had any bad side effects. Although I have heard some people say they gained a bit of weight from it...
But the pills... you have to remember to take one EVERY DAY..the injection...you just have to remember once every three months :-) Also, it doesnt hurt like some injections. AND it's more effective... :-)
Good luck!

Pills and injections and stuff like that are made of chemicals so in the long run, if you are truly worried about your health, they will effect you in the end and not in the good way. Good luck any way, I've got coil personally.

PILL!! My sister had one injection and not only did her period start and never stop, but it stayed for 14 months!! Then, it took her 6 years to get pregnant. The injection is too iffy. It is an effective way of birth control but there are too many potentially upsetting side effects.

my sister, who is diet disiplined to a fault, gained three stone on the injection in a month. try the pill first, it may be a hassle having to remember that tablet everyday, but my sister now struggles with her weight because of that thing, once you gain weight and lose it again, it takes fifteen years for your body to stop trying to gain weight, this may sound stupid, but once you gain that weight the body thinks that's it's natural fat level and tries to maintain you there and it takes up to fifteen years to convince it otherwise.
my sister now has the coil and loves it, the one she's on releases pill like hormones into her system, but if you try this then have someone there to look after you when you get out of the doctors, my sister went through a lot of pain the day it was inserted, but has never regretted it.

the pill is so much better than the injection, every single person I know who had the injection has a bad story, including me, don't do it, take the pill, but make sure your good at time keeping.

sorry but if you are eighteen then I have nothing to say to you, I am african and from here I can say you are way too young.
Dont try the injections however, the hormonal changes will be too much for your young body.
