Drafting, or slipstreaming, is a technique in sports racing where competitors align in a close group in order to reduce the overall effect of drag or fluid resistance of the group. Especially when high speeds are involved, drafting can significantly reduce the average energy expenditure required to maintain a certain speed.

Bump drafting is a tactic used in NASCAR races, it begins with standard drafting but the following car pulls up behind the lead car and bumps into the rear of it, pushing the lead car ahead, to maintain momentum. When done in side by side traffic on a straightaway this can assist the lead car in passing, and allows the following car to follow through. This tactic can destabilize the handling of the lead car, however, and if done roughly or in the wrong position (e.g. close to the entry of the turn) it can lead to a crash.

Bump drafting is most commonly used at the larger tracks of Talladega Super Speedway and Daytona International Speedway because a restrictor plate is used.

Drafting is when one car gets right up behind the car in front of him sometimes even touching the car in front. What happens is both cars divide the air the the car is moving through and the car in the rear can maintain it's place while using less power until at the proper time the car in the rear using the saved power pulls out and slingshot past the car in front and take the better position. It's done mostly in NASCAR type races.

That is when the car behind follows a car close enough that he/she is driving in the wind current created by the lead car. It allows the second car to run at the same speed but use less fuel and thus last longer in the race.\\

When one car rides the bumper of the car in front. The lead car is dealing with all of the wind resistance and is therefore working harder. (Burning more gas.) By drafting the following car can conserve fuel and make fewer pit stops.

Turbulence creates a partial vacuum behind a speeding car. When a follower pulls close to the the car ahead, both benefit. The lead car by a reduction in the drag due to the vacuum and the follower by a reduction in the drag due to frontal air resistance.

At high speed at the track.... drafting means that a car gets behind another car and is sucked along at the same speed without having to break through the air barrier.. it saves on gas.

the lead car cuts the air and the drag coefficient is not there for the car in the rear.
less air resistance means less fuel used and the car can go faster.
You can do it with semi trucks on the highway and then pass it you will feel the difference.
