there are ok, they get replaced all the time, you can't delete them while windows is loaded, they are being used. You can open most dat files with notepad. You can delete them with a free program called cleanup. It will find them when it is deleteing all the temp files for you,and delete them on the next boot up, but windows is going to write them back again

fileext.com

it tells you about file extensions and how(if you can) to open them.

.dat is a data file. And that file is for Windows.

I used to have Zone Alarm Pro I think that erased the index.dat file.

http://www.acesoft.net/ (not freeware, but 30 day free trial, erase, then use firefox for browser)

http://www.ccleaner.com/ (freeware)this might work

I think it's a read only file, and it not help you for anything if you open it.

Yes - but what do you want to open it for??? It's used by IE, and is "locked" while the OS is running.. it CAN be opened, but the info is of no use to you. It's just data and pointers, etc.
