First you may ask the kids to draw a picture of someone who is sad/happy/angry, etc. Look at their perceptions and maybe share them with the class. Each one you can hold up and say This person looks happy. She is smiling.
Find magazine pictures of people and make like a scrapbook. Ask the kids to tell you how the person is feeling. When they tell you that they are sad ask them what they should do for someone when they are sad. It is like an interactive discussion where you can get their feedback about what they already know.
There is a poster called "How do you feel today?" Or ¿Cómo te sientes hoy? Perhaps you can google it. It is helpful. When kids are young and can not express themselves all that well you can ask them to point to a picture that expresses how they feel today.
While most kids do know how to recognize emotions kids who have had a rough start do not always know how to do this. It can help you to identify those who may need more help.

I think children have a wonderful natural perception of emotions, and can read adults a zillion times better than most adults can read adults moods
