First...let me express my sympathy to you. The decision to put a loved animal down is never an easy one.
I'm going to assume that you are looking for an inexpensive way to end your animals suffering. Many people here seem to think you are some sicko but I'm giving you the benefit of a doubt.
I do think however that you should contact a vet. Explain your situation, he or she may be able to help you out. Maybe there is even a way to donate the animal to a vet school where it could be euthanized then used as a specimen for students to study! That would be a lovely way for your horses death to help other horses get good medical care.
Call around and ask for help. If one vet turns you down try another.
Again, my sincere sympathy to you during this difficult time.

To answer you question ...NO.
And do as the other have suggested !!!!
Takes a well placed shot in either one of two places to kill a horse, WITHOUT it suffering!!!.
Call a Vet, or find someone who is willing to care for an older horse, we have one that is now 27.

You should have a vet do it - for legal and moral reasons. If you decide to do it with a hammer, you should try it on yourself first to make sure you can hit the right spot.

If you do that, it could qualify as animal abuse/neglect. BIG LEGAL issues there. besides, if you actually had a horse, you should know that no horse is going to stand for someone swing an object towards their head.
