I have twin two year olds and we used to play memory (spread all th card on the floor face down. turn 2 over and hope they match) with number flash cards and alphabet cards. They can recognize all the letters and numbers plus count to 20 already.
Now we play with regular cards and when they turn over two cards they have to add them together (they count the shapes on the cards) in order to keep the pair. Face cards mean they get an extra turn.
They arn a ton from these games and have a blast.

War -
divide the deck between all players, everyone turns over top card at same time, highest card takes all the cards from that turn. If turned over cards are the same, each player deals out three cards face down and then turns over next card, highest card takes ALL cards from that turn.
Long version - person who winds up with all cards wins.
Short version - person with most cards after bottom of original stack is reached is winner.
old maid, go fish (described above)
You may want to get a Hoyle's book of card games. They have HUNDREDS of games (and descriptions of how to play). as the kids get older they can find new, more challenging games to teach themselves (and you) how to play.

Old Maid: Remove one card from the pack. Deal out all the remaining cards. Set down all pairs in hand, black nines, red fours, etc. The person to the left of the dealer then randomly draws a card from the hand of the person to their left. If it pairs, they lay it down. Then play moves around the table to the left until all cards but one are on the table. That card and person are the Old Maid.

Memory - you can use a regular deck of cards.
Take out about 5 pairs, say 2 queens, 2 threes, etc. Suffle, turn them face down and take turns trying to turn over 2 matching cards. If not, turn them back face down and next person takes a turn. Helps with learning numbers and memory.

Just make one up..........Like playing slap jack? Remember that game................just change it and make it slap kings or something.......................Or the first red four takes all the cards on the table............................Or you can keep all the cards from aces as ones to tens...Make a math game out of it..........since your five year old is 5, then all fives are wild and get the pile of cards......You'll think of more....Have fun!
