is it on the thumb, or under the skin of the thumb, if it's under the skin it should be a ganglon, they're harmless, if it changes size at any time, have it checked immediatly. if it's on the thumb, then get it checked, ganglons appear under the skin, I've never heard of one over the skin.

Its called a ganglion, I had one on the back of my hand, it just appeared one day and dissapeared slowly. (took a couple of months) Nothing to worry about, dont bother your doctor with it unless it cheanges shape or colour too much.
