I just heard someone on the TV say that when people ask her to describe herself, she says that first and foremost she is an American. Do you think the same way. Would you describe yourself primarily in terms of your nationality, your religion, your gender, your political affiliation, sexual preference or something else After telling me your primary category, what follows after that. I do not want words like friendly, sexy, easygoing, opinionated, etc.

To those who are questioning my rational for looking for broad categories rather than more personal adjectives, the later has been done many times here already. I'm not trying to stereotype anybody. I was just curious how you would classify yourself in those terms. But OK, say whatever you want, whatever makes you happy. I'm open to anything.

Wow so many great answers. In the end I am happy that you went around my restrictions, but this left me with the dilemma of whose answer to choose as best. There are a few that are right up there. But because I am FORCED to pick only one, I am going with Little Flower. Ranked right alongside of her are Jen and She Wolf

[Update: Having read all the responses prior to mine, I agree with those who say that "broad categories" aren't what make us who we are. There are internal "characteristics" that are more accurate to describe WHO we are. However, we can't ignore the broad categories, either. We are these things, in part, because of who we are internally. And some of these categories are the very reason why we are who we are on the inside. It's a synchronicity; a symbiotic relationship. You've asked a specific question about broad categories, and that's the spirit in which I've answered.]

An interesting question...I can't wait to see all the responses!

How would I describe myself? Well, there are 2 things off the top of my head that are unchangable: gender and religion. I'm a woman and I'm a Christian. True, there's such a thing as sex-reassignment surgery; but I'm a woman inside and out. No need for an operation. And yes, people convert to different religions all the time...but I won't be doing that. My religion is first and foremost a relationship with God. My heart and my life are devoted to Him.

So, I'm a Christian Woman. I'm married. Unless my husband dies or cheats on me, that status won't change either. Wherever he goes, I go. We're in America, so unless we decide to change our nationality (which we have absolutely no plans to do), then I am also an American. A PROUD American. Political offiliation is almost meaningless these days. It's enough to be American.

I'm a wife. I'm a sister and a daughter. I'm a friend. I'm a lover. I'm a member of the human race. I'm a survivor. I'm an observer and speculator of human nature. I'm educated. I'm an activist. I'm a helper of the poor and homeless. I'm a giver.

Beyond these things, I can't think of anything that is important to describe myself.

P.S. As a woman, I reserve the right to modify this list at any time. lol ; )

Well im british ...but i dont think nationality is a big deal
religion ....i have none ...or the need for 1.
i am all woman..
politics are a waste of time and bore the pants off me
and the best question ...sexual preference ...definatley males ...only males ...and i prefer doggy style lol
that ok for you ... most of all i have no category...that i could say i fall in... i just live life as best i can without hurting anyone or thing to the best of my ability...

If someone asked me to describe myself - the LAST thing I would think of is nationality, politics, religion, etc...that is not who we are...who we are is what radiates from our soul - the good and the bad of it. And the words you do not want us to decribe ourselves with? That is the only words that TRULY does describe someone...so?..I can't describe myself to you I guess..lol...the fact that I'm American or Christian or Straight or any of that will NOT tell anyone what KIND of person I am.

nature loving hippie group. Oh yeah, i'm in that group. @Giovonni- honestly, its greater basic minded to greater wholesome human beings into packing containers instead of seeing each and each guy or woman as somebody. for this reason why you have placed all black human beings in an elementary field.

My first inclination was to describe myself as a thinking individual that wouldn't stereotype myself in any "category".
