If a person was charged with a class 6 felony and a class 1 misdemeanor a year ago can they get a teaching job? Why or why not? The cases are now closed.

The charges were assault and battery and making terroristic threats.

Figures. You morons would convict an innocent man for sport--I was never convicted. I have NO CRIMINAL RECORD. Of course I can get a job, and everyone who said anything negative about me should be executed by the state for treason.

You did not provide enough information for anyone to answer this question. Teachers, like the rest of the population, sometimes find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Some types of crimes automatically exclude a person from having contact with children; other types of crime have no effect at all.

Another consideration is the final disposition of the crimes. The accusation, or the charges filed against the person, should have no bearing on their employability if the trial acquits them. If, however, the trial ends in a conviction, then the circumstances of the case play a large role in the employability.

Should a DUI conviction prevent an otherwise good teacher from doing their job? Morals-type convictions must prevent that person from having access to our kids.

Whatever the case, when you apply for the job, be honest on the application and during the interview. If you think that your case has unique circumstances, speak to the person doing the hiring and explain your situation.

Good luck!

moral turpitude.

ok, let me digress. first teaching job? about a snowball's chance... .

what charges? sounds like assault. first job? see above. otherwise you might get through based on your record. that is if you've got it resolved. alcohol? around here they arrest you for looking at a drink it seems, it's just an economic ploy and no one takes it serious if they can afford to pay out the nose. otherwise it has contributed to life shattering experience, such as not getting a teaching job.

edit>> aha i thought it sounded like assault. that's a toughy. could go either way. again the question. first job?

the local university has an edu dept. i see this stuff a lot. the tough part is internships and then first job. you need to find a suitable sponsor, if you know what i mean. get your foot in the door and don't make even the slightest error, or you are out the door and your best bet with an edu degree will be somewhere else, or a private junior college/business school etc. maybe you can bury the infractions with some out of country "teach english" jobs for a couple years then try again in another state.

yeah, I sure wouldnt want a dirtbag teaching my kids.

Actually, if the charges were dropped, maybe you can teach our kids. But, unless you change your ways, it won't be long before you spend a lot of time in jail. Cops treat teachers who hang around kids somewhat different than those who spend most of their time in the Merchant Marines far away from the States.
