Ancient Egypt is interesting, but I'm more interested in Mesopotamian culture, preferably Ancient Assyrian.

You bet--Dr. Zahi Hawass is a god in our family. Every time one of the Discovery or History channels has a program on Egypt, whether it's about the pharoahs, the pyramids, the Valley of the Kings, the Egyptian gods, or whatever, it's on at our house.

I lived in Cairo for a year back in the 80s and toured most of the great sites, except Abu Simbel in Aswan. It is hard to describe these monuments ... you can feel the age of them like a great beast solemnly regarding you. The air around them is somehow forelorn.
If you haven't been, you should go. Soon. Before Israel nukes the place.
