That's like asking "How long is a piece of string?" It depends on where you will store the external drive (temperature, particularly, has a detrimental effect on storage capabilities, as does whether it's going to be near speakers, magnets and the like), who will be using it, how many times it is written to, how often it is defragged, whether it's in any danger of being dropped, etc. etc.
Having said all that, generally, hard drives, whether they're internal or external are usually quite good at retaining information. If you have stuff on your hard drive that you desperately need to safeguard, I'd advise backing it up to CD or DVD, as well as keeping it on your hard drive ... just in case.

An external hard drive will last as long as an internal hard drive - about 60,000 hours unless it gets dropped, caught in a flood, run over, etc. The length of time is not really an issue.

Huh ? Sorry ? Did I hear you wisely: you're literally retaining backup copies on the comparable single tension because of the fact the unique archives ? How did you want to recuperate in case you lost your complicated tension ? the right way is to maintain your backups on a diverse media, e.g. an exterior complicated tension. So persist with j's technique to repeat all of it on a detachable exterior tension. in case you fairly have numerous archives (how lots ?) then that reproduction might take it slow, so wait and notice. as quickly as you have copied your backups on the exterior tension, examine the total length and style of archives, and study the counts with the unique archives: be sure they tournament. purely then, initiate deleting the unique archives to make room on your complicated tension.
