Homework on weekends is normal and has been for years.

Homework teaches kids that a certain amount of discipline is required to get by in life. The further you progress through school (secondary then tertiary), the more work is required to obtain decent grades and believe me, you are going to be doing alot more homework than you are now.

An hour or two over the weekend is a small price to pay for a decent education.

It's the weekend now. And you're asking me to think?

This answer may seem flip, but my quip conceals some serious motives. I am, in fact, just now taking a break from doing a mountain of work on Labor Day weekend. And I'm not complaining about it. Many of us labor under a mistaken notion that labor is inherently a bad thing. What we really resent is labor that's not voluntary. On our own, we're perfectly happy doing "work" -- exercising, practicing, reading, looking stuff up, asking questions and answering them on Yahoo. Make it involuntary and suddenly we can't wait to be done with it. Suddenly it's a bad thing.

So change your frame of mind -- come up with your own reason to do your homework, so that it's not so painful. Because face it -- you're going to have a lot more weekend homework to do in the future. Wishing it will go away won't work. Wishing that you could learn to enjoy it might.

Even if we grant that your homework is somehow a bad thing, you're asking for a protected status that others simply don't enjoy. Your parents probably work on the weekends. Your teachers probably grade your homework on the weekends, and you probably appreciate it when you get papers returned to you on Mondays. Your parents and teachers both had to do homework on the weekends when they were kids.

All this suggests that once you're out of school, things will simply get harder -- until you learn the knack of enjoying things you didn't plan yourself.

No, I'm not saying that you should brainwash yourself into thinking that your side-job as a crash test dummy is fun -- if the work really, honestly, is bad for you, then don't do it. But if you're just resenting a history lesson or grumbling about reading a novel or writing an essay (as I'm doing right now, here), realize that other people do these things voluntarily -- if you find their reasons and make them your own, you'll find that life in general becomes a more cheerful experience.

Why shouldn't they give homework on the weekends? You can do it Saturday or Sunday. What' s the big deal? Get it done and go to class prepared for the coming week.

What's to keep you from doing your homework? Do you have a job or something?

I attended a private high school . Our school schedule was 6 1/2 days a week. Your education during your very short youth will determine your much longer adult life. High School and College consists of eight years. It sets the stage for the next 60. Figure the ratio.

It depends on the purpose of the homework, length of time to complete, and age of the child.
