Before the "modern era" of NASCAR they ran 2 or 3 nights a week.The tracks were 1/4 or 1/2 mile tracks where only 34 to 36 cars could race (1/4 mile was 28).Then on the speedways there would be 45 or 50 cars ( early races at Talladega everyone who came would run nearly 60 cars at one time).Then in the modern era the governing body played with several different amount of vehicles and after trial and error it was set at 42 plus 1 spot for a past champion if needed.

Don't know if there is a set reason. The first race ever run at Darlington in 1950 had 75 cars. It does seem odd to have an odd # of cars.
