If you're really not sure, take the check to your local bank and ask to speak to one of the people who are sitting at a desk rather than a teller. Explain the situation and ask for their opinions and advice. Be sure to bring the check and if it came with any other papers or if you still have the envelope, bring that too.
Banks are usually great for helping out with things like this and they're very knowledgeable!
I receive checks all the time and although it's not a scam, there's always a catch. Usually by cashing the check, you are agreeing to pay for some type of service. Even if you don't realize that is what you are doing, you can be held to it and owe them the additional money in the future.
I'm afraid that it is probably true that "there ain't no free lunch!"
If you call the people who sent it to you and it is a way to get you to accept a service or loan that you don't want, they may try to encourage you to cash it, telling you it's a real check. Sure it is, a check with a catch! I suggest following what the bank says instead.

Make sure it's actually a check. Does it have an routing/transit # (the account number of a bank with the Federal Reserve - it's a 9 digit number), account number and check number on the bottom in MICR encoding? MICR encoding are black, stylized numbers that are automatically read by check processing equipment.
If not, its probably a "coupon" or other advertising gimmick. These are very popular with car dealers, and refinancing companies. Be careful, you may owe interest from the second you cash it.
If in doubt take it into your bank or check-cashing store and ask.

If it has a phone number on it or business try getting in touch with them to ask. If no go to your bank and explain the situation to the back, Im sure they can help you. Whatever you do DON"T CASH IT!!! It could be a deception to get your checking/savings account number.

does the check have a return address on it and if that is the case you may be able to contact that person. but check it out first before you cash it.
some of these are a scam and it may trick you on something you don't want

it probably because someone owes you money. if you belive that this isnt the case in which you would recieve this check, contact the people who sent it to you. if there is no way to contact whoever sent you this check, it might be fraudulent. if in doubt go to the police.

read the check and look for fine print somewhere, if you cash it you could be signing up for some type of service.
