Don't know the details but for sure you would need to pass tests and be licensed. You probably knew that.
My advice would be to work for someone in the business. Six months to a year on the job would be more valuable than any other kind of preparation. In effect your boss would be training you to go out and compete with him later. Not a great system but it's done all the time!
