Well, it's called "self" esteem, not "other people" esteem, so it's something YOU have to do to improve how you feel about yourself. Maybe you need to hang around with different people, change your image, or realize that you're cool the way you are. Whatever it is, YOU have to do it; don't rely on other people to tell you how great you are.

You should ask yourself maybe where the low self esteem is coming from. Is it coming from you or is it how other people make you feel? Did you just get out of a relationship where a guy picked another girl over you? It might help to see a counsler to talk through your feelings.

Every kind of advertisement we see (1,000's per day) tells us we are lacking something. It's hard to have ANY self-esteem, really.
It's very very difficult to learn to love yourself (not in an empty, narcissistic way, but a real way). And no matter who you are, you can suffer agonies of low self-esteem, so it really is all in your head. A great example was Princess Diana---she was enormously rich in her own right, tall, blonde, pretty, popular, and kind to people. But she also suffered miserably from bulimia, all sorts of complexes, and insecurity because her mother had deserted her and her siblings when she was young. Nothing else in her life could correct this "hurt".
Look around at your life, and compliment yourself for what you are doing right. Look at yourself honestly, and build on the good things in your life---don't let one "hurt" affect your entire life.

If there's something about yourself that you are unhappy with, then try to improve on that bit. And if this really is more about your faults and what you don't have or can't do, then learn to appreciate everything that you have been blessed with. I'm sure you have quite a few strengths that not many people have.

Just love yourself and then others will love you, too :)
