I have a few tattoo's but sometimes the skin seems to be bumpy (raised quite a lot compared to the areas where there is no tattoo) does anybody know what causes this raised ink effect?
does it ever happen to you?
should i be worried? or is it normal?

I have two tatoos, and neither of them are raised. They are over a year old each. During healing, I think a couple of bumps is normal, until the skin heals. If your tatoos are older though, raised ink could indicate that the tatoo needle was applied too hard, causing the ink to penetrate the skin too deeply and scar or raise. My sister in law has a tatoo that is raised, and the tatoo artist she had check it told her that when she was getting it done, they pushed down too hard on the needle. Maybe have someone take a look at it and see if they can do anything. In the sun, you are supposed to use a very high block (>45spf) to prevent any raising, as this could cause scarring and raising too.

Occasionally the body can have a reaction to an injury or a cut - and can heal forming a 'hypertrophic' or 'keloid' scar. These are basically raised scars but can also be bright red and can be unsightly. They can occassionally occur with a tattoo. They occur most commonly on the chest, the upper back and ear lobes, and are more common in people of African origin. They sometimes improve over time, but if really bad they can be treated with steroid injection. Some people think Vitamin E oil or Bio-Oil helps.

It just happens sometimes. Mine on my shoulder is raised at times, especially when I'm having an allergy attack or if I'm tired. My friend's used to raise when she was drinking but would go back down when the alchohol was out of her system. I don't think it's anything to worry about. But a good tattoo artist should know why this happens and be able to answer your question.

P.S.- I just found this little article, it offers some explanations.

My husband has a couple of tattoos by the same artist done over a period of two years. The first parts that were done are raised. The artist said it was where he was pressing harder during the first ones. The most recent additions aren't raised at all. I guess it just depends on how heavy the hand of the artist is.

I got mine like 15 years ago and still to this day it raises up sometimes I will notice it....it's not big deal don't worry about it, I am not sure of the exact cause but it has something to do with your own body breaking down the ink, not to worry though.

It is quite normal, the raised bits are normally the black lines or outlines, just keep it clean and apply plenty of Vaseline.
I have many tattoos that are nearly thirty years old, that still look like they were done last year, due to careful care following having them done. Once they are fully healed, they are there for good.

P.S. I've just read some of the other answers, they are basically right, tattoos do fade and do misfigure as you get older, and your body changes. But like I said, follow my advice and they will look good for many years, in fact for life.

Mine raise when i am stressed out or tired as your internal body makeup is different during these times - it is completely normal and usually goes down within a day or so.
I usually just have a warm shower and then apply lotion afterwards.

yes its normal. i've had mine for 8 years and the skin still gets raised up, especially after being out in the sun for awhile. It also itches too.

Its probably just scar tissue. Its nothing to be alarmed about. When you inject something foreign into yor body you body will sometimes form scar tissue around the foreign object (ie ink)
