Answers so far are right, the southern part of the island is dry and hot (there's even a small "desert" area near Guanica). However, being the driest part of the island makes the heat bearable. The absolute worst is a hot day at the Yunque rain forest, with a humidity of approx. 80% any temp. above 80 degrees will dehydrate you in a short time. Keep that in mind. High temp with high humidity is a dangerous combination.

THE NORTH PART has the best clubs, restaurants and hotels in Puerto RIco. Other parts may have some but are packed with locals and driving could be complicated. If I were you I would go on the safe side in San Juan and then as you know better start hanging out further and further.
People are friendly and the currency is dollar so don't worry. Also peoplespeak some English...good luck
