Everyone is high and mighty on these potential stars..although don't they need to prove themselfs for a few years to get that status in the NHL?
Who cares about their numbers against previous rookie point getters, their playing in the no holding or you get a penelty era now.
If one gets a career ending injury in October they will be forgotten as fast as I just said their names.

They were among the top scorers in the league last year. They are real stars already.

Well, the NHL purposely created all the hype around these guys to get fans back after the lockout. But I think they live up to all the hype and expectations. They finished top 10 in the scoring race even while playing on two of the worst teams. Crosby already has an A to show for his leadership though he's only 18 and Ovechkin's got the Calder Trophy. Crosby and Ovechkin are as good as everyone says they are and they're only going to get better.

Here's my two cents. In a league that stuggles to draw attention from outside Ovechkin has found a way to sell hockey just with the "wow" factor. Crosby is highly touted and is fun to watch live (I went to two Flyers-Penguins games) While I also agree with the above post saying Eric Staal is the real deal, and think Ryder has a great upside. I think that Sidney Crosby's "status" comes from his talent with dealing with the media. The dude really carries himself like a seasoned pro. As for rookies and second year players getting too much "status"... As a crazy avid NHL fan I say... "what status?" This sport gets no respect (even though I think it should) And whatever status they acheive is earned. If as a player you are fun to watch, excell at your profession (after all this is these guys jobs) I say who cares if you're eleven years old if you can flat out play you can flat out play. And yes this is the "no holding/ton of penalty era" (as is should be-thank God finally) but it is also the era of freaking amazing goalies. No diss on Gretzky or the other big guys of the past but look at some of the masked men they faced. Some of those dudes look worse than the guys in my local mens league. Anyways. God Bless

The numbers that both players put out last year were among the highest in the league. Nevermind amongst rookies. These two are stars already and are just going to get better. It is more difficult to amass points in todays game compared to the 80's where everyone and their dog scored 50 goals. The fact ovechkin did it in his rookie season makes him a phenom by todays standards.

I think Ovechkin is real. wait until his fellow Russian Alexander semin joins him this year. It will take few years for Washington Caps to be a contender, but Ovechkin is already a star. I went to see the game last year just see him play. amazing player.
I agree with you that if his career is over now, he will be forgotten; that will happen to many other players in the league.
He is fun to watch.

yes sure look at Lindros getting injured early in his career and things can happened. but these kids are the real deal same as Malkin , Cam Ward and Eric Stall, Nash. sure one big hit can finish them and back in the day of the Great One Gretzky in the 80's nobody was holding him but if someone was to try and hurt him then that guy would get killed. you will start to see more though guys on teams to protect players like Crosby like Gretzky had back in the day to let him play. But Crosby, Ovechkin, Staal, and Malkin have more of an edge then Gretzky did they would go in the corners and through hits More often, and the players are twice as big back in the day but the players today don't have as much of a big heart like the old days and would sacrifice their body's to win at all cost.

GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!

i would have to say ovechkin. They are both very skilled players but i think crosby is too much of a baby. He complains over every little call that goes against him (even an offside) whereas ovechkin doesn't.He just continues to play to make up for any call that went against him.

I dont understand your question you dont think that Crosby and Ovechkin dont deserve that much attention why it has always been like that with rookies with that much talent Bossy,Lemieux,Gretzky,Messier they dont need to get that status they already got it .There just too damn good

LOL-I'm old enough to remember when people used to say Gretzky would never make it in the NHL because of his awkward skating, and lack of toughness. It's Deja Vu all over again.

You apparently haven't watch either one of them play. Ovechkin is absolutely amazing, Crosby isn't bad either.
