Fine arts and sports enhance academics. Test scores will fall. You no longer have a school, you have a warehouse for kids. US education is headed for the toilet, and removing the texture, the broad-based educational framework for our students is key to making the USA a second-rate or third-rate nation.
Children learn in layers. During their formative years is the only opportunity to FULLY educate them, and without art, music, sports, without sound, movement, and challenge to every part of them, they will not thrive or grow.

A definite point to make is ALL kids need some kind of outlet. Children should not be made to sit in a classroom 8 hours a day with the exception of eating times. The sports bothers me more than the arts really. A concerned teacher can get the arts integrated into her curriculum. However integrating sports would be much harder. Most states require at least 30 min. of physical activity. Check the State laws on the requirements for your state. Also bring up the childhood obesity epidemic. This is major!

Students are children that need creativity in their lives. The standard literature, mathematics, sciences, etc. is meaningless if children can't be stimulated in other ways.
