What is currently a nice, relaxed place to meet someone on the weekend - and what is the best place to go after dark?

Death spud.. A library.. Come on surely there must be a place nice enough to meet a girl? And what is wrong with darkness? It gets dark at night in September... Please someone answer, or I'll insist on meeting this person in Edinburgh or London ;o)

Lucky you asked about meeting someone on the weekend, because Mondays can be a little dull in Town (!).
Depending on how you will arrive in such a splendid City, and wether you will be encumbered with a bike, will make the initial meeting place relevant in as much as travelling by bus, or tram, to other destinations may be warranted. If you consider that you may be in need of a bike to enable your quick get-away, should the company prove less than satisfactory, then options may be limited without a huge chain to secure it someplace safe. The length of your stay will also affect your luggage situation somewhat, I should imagine.
Should you arrive by train, at Piccadilly lets say, then station platforms are notorius for being less than romantic (apart from in the movies) so you may wish to meet with your aquaintance somewhere easy enough to find, perhaps infront of The Royal exchange. If your friend is less than enamoured with the bustle of city life, they may be tempted to whisk you away from the town and to some place of tranquillity so they meet you eye to eye, as it were. However, you could always stop and chat over a bite to eat in one of the less formal vegetarian cafes hidden down the backstreets. A good one is snuggled under the Manchester Buddhist centre down Turner street. This would provide a good opportunity for you to discuss any specific sights you would like to view whilst in Manchester. A favorite haunt of mine, the only valid place to shop, is Afflex palace. It's a veritable cavern of alternative crazyness. Your friend may wish to sit and gaze at you rather than shop though. Perhaps you won't see as much of Manchester as you had hoped.

Manchester has a wealth of galleries and museums worth a look too, but such places are not always conducive to great conversation except after the visit over a nice bottle of wine. Though I am sure you will let it be known if you have any specific requests, don't feel like you should be lead around like a lap dog!

As for after dark, then sleeping arrangements need to be bourne in mind. Can your friend be sure that there will be a spare room at home that weekend (possibly not)? This is an important factor when planning your social life in Manchester, after dark. You could stay in the locality of your friends home or choose to remain in town for the nightlife. There are some fairly chilled out pubs all around Manchester, and it's suburbs. I feel sure that if your inital meeting with your friend is a positive experience, the day will flow into the night without needing too much in the way of planning...

Go to places you enjoy to go to without any other motives.

If you don't like coffee at night, well, then it would be bad to meet at a coffee house because you don't like too.

Or why would you go to a monster truck show in hopes to meet someone who enjoys art, and culture? Sometimes in life you're rediscoving who you are. When this happens, expanding your interests can fulfill you in ways you never imagined.

All you can really do is live your life in happiness and enthusiasm and eventually, you'll meet a match. Don't get discouraged if you don't instantly get that match, but see it as an opportunity to fortify what you truly like.

Depends on how well you know them. I would say somewhere quite lively for meeting in the evening but not too noisey..

A busy cafe or hotel bar/lounge would be good for daytime

As for after dark.. maybe a late night cinema show or again restaurant/bar
