Educate yourself (I'm not talking about schooling, but enlarging your mind so you can use what others have learned to understand things and think things through).
Fight for educational reform. There's currently a reform movement in math that is right on the money, where students think mathematically, do mathematics, thereby gaining an accurate, deep, and useful understanding of math and what it tells us about the world.
Promote this and similar reform in all subject areas -- where emphasis is on gaining a deep understanding of central concepts, and learning to apply what they learn to important questions and problems.
If we could get one generation who could use the full power of their minds, they would not be open to manipulation, and would be able to use (and add to) the useful knowledge we already have, and apply that knowledge to making things better.
Go for it.

Study as hard as you can so you can contribute new ideas to the world and don't make money what motivates you.
Encourage others to find their true interests, things they are really good at and suggest they pick that as a career instead of what is fashionable, needed, or expected. You work so much of your life that you should be happy doing what you choose as your career and you will be successful (and so will America) if you are in the career you love.
Start a movement to protect the environment and demand that elected officials be accountable to the voters and VOTE based upon researching the candidates character instead of what they say.
Spend more time helping others than making yourself feel good and you'll feel good as a benefit and the world will be a much better place.
Think for yourself -- learn to take all information and then think about it as many different ways as you can. Seek-out people who differ from you and listen to them so you can learn -- listen especially to senior citizens who are a wealth of knowledge.

One of the best ways to change America and the globe for the better is to join youth presided clubs... The youth control the decisions and what the club does for community and global service. My Junior Optimist club is currently holding a stuffed animal drive for children at a certain orphanage in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia. Try looking for an Optimist club, Rotary international, Key Club, Builder's Club, or any student-run community service organization. Youth do make a difference!

Vote.That's a start.Then think about working your way into public office.Start small.County council,or something low-level like that.Then go after bigger,more influential positions.Are you still in school? Go after whatever student council position is open.
If you really want to make a difference,hold firm to your values and beliefs as you work your way up the political ladder.
Write to your congressmen and senators.Let them know what you think about the issues that are coming up for a vote in their particular house.Encourage others to write similar letters.Elected officials only get (and keep) their jobs by keeping their consituents (voters!) happy.
Most of these are avenues that are open to the majority of Americans,but few us utilize these options.That's why this country is in such a sad state these days.Everyone wants to b*tch,but no one wants to take the time to help make a better nation.

Stop listening to the media and get off our ****s and actually work. We gotta love life and realize that life is not an easy thing. Thier is birth and death...point a and point b and in the middle a lot of crap happens... the youth of today are not diciplined enough...with this time-out crap... and too many are taking advantage of the freedom of speech issue. We as a society have to be more conservative and watch our youth...If you cant do that then you shouldent have children at all... you would only be wercking our future.

Simple. Stop being brainwashed by the left. Don't believe that if we just sing "Kumbaya" all the terrorists will lay down their weapons and love us. Understand we are in a life-and-death struggle with rogue states like Iraq and North Korea and that taking out Saddam was a prerequisite to being prepared for the coming challenges. Be anti-war, but not so much that another Pear Harbor on 9/11 comes. If you're not doing anything illegal, don't freak out about the possibility appropriate monitoring of overseas calls is being done, even if it's without warrants. Ditto monitoring of bank records. Do lot vote for ANY lonny lefty liberal lyin' losers! In fact, before you express an opinion or vote, STUDY the issue and the candidate. Don't be spoon fed the left's lies. Find out for yourself. The left will try and persuade you with talks of class warfare, anti-corporate hate and racism. Don't fall for this. They try and appeal to your lower instincts. Hatred, prejudice, envy. Their method is to get you to react instead of thinking.
Oh, and don't believe things just because so & so told you or because it's on the web. There are plenty of people on the web & elsewhere who say 9/11 was an inside job, Bush stole the 2000 election (and for that matter 2004), and that there were no WMD in Iraq.
Liars all.

The youth group at my church (made up of a lot of inner city kids) is learning about love and compassion. They are learning to treat others with respect. The are learning to help those in need. They are learning all of this by doing - hands on activities that help them know that what they are learning is really necessary and important. They will make this world a better place to live.

Work within political and religious groups to make them become more moderate in theirs views instead of the current fanaticism you see in America today. Demonizing anyone who is not in your political party or religious faith is not going to help civil society in America. Being an extremist is not the way to bring people together.

~~~first I think that in High Scool,,,there should be a class on volunteering,,,If each student would pick a subject that they are compasionate about,,,like animal cruilty,,,,or teen pregnancy,,,or world disasters like hurricane Katrina victims,,and they volunteer at certain organisations,,,they will be better citizens in the future because they have seen part of the "real" world that they will be entering after high school,,,,and they can continue there community services into adulthood.~~~
Stop acting like they come from the hood. White folk act like they are black people.
They need to start their own thing, like in the 60's. Stop this crazy war, and try and make peace with other people.
Stop the Big Business politicians from sending more jobs overseas.
