As a long-time pro-vocalist, I found the best way to keep my tubes clean was to gargle with hydrogen peroxide every night before bed. This kills off the bacteria and fungi that can grow and attack the vocal chord tissue, giving it a ragged sound. It may taste awful, but I guarantee that it is safe and effective.

I assume you have the good sense to avoid smoke and alcohol. Stay away from sugar-based drinks (even diet) and avoid ice. Use vocal technique to keep from wrecking your voice during a performance. Make sure your monitor and mic are nice and hot so you don't have to scream to be heard. Always use a top-quality mic, the nicest you can afford.

A lot of rock singers think it is cool to get that raspy, raw sound, and scream away to achieve it. Years later, when the surgeon
is hacking nodes off their vocal chords, they are singing a different tune. You are smart to protect your pipes!
