I have read over other's answers and I think there is a wide range of ages the first period starts. I was 11 and in 6th grade, but I needed a bra when I was in 4th grade. I wasn't overweight, I wasn't overly athletic, I was just me. And as for the reader who said she will NOT have a normal cycle for a while, Sorry honey, it may happen, becuause I have never missed a period in the 20 years I have been menstruating. It was regular from the very first month. So it could happen. Althought I just learned an interesting fact recently-men secrete their own natural hormones that counteract puberty in girls. Saying; if a dad is in the house and around the female child, she will start puberty at a later age. Now, there are exceptions to every rule, but on a larger scale, girls with dad around may start later...

I am surprised there are so few correct answers. The main thing to remember is nutrition. If the fat percentage of the girl in question is low, along with other needed nutrients, then the start of periods will be delayed. If the nutrition is better, the girl has a normal body fat percentage, then she will get her first period at an earlier age. If you consider female athletes who pursue their event relentlessly, you will see that they might stop having periods or never get them. If nature thinks that the body cannot support a pregnancy, then it will end the process before it begins. It is also not generally perceived as healthy to have such poor nutrition. Bad things can also happen if there is too much body fat on a girl. It's all about health and nutrition. In some isolated cases there are other factors.

Do U believe that Water Companies can screen out Hormones from the water supplied 2 URs/ever1's tap?
I don't. They add Fluoride, it can cause problems if U get 2 much.
Think about the amount of people on various hormones, they're there in the water,
Water is water, Precipitation can fall anywhere & once it's in there, it's in there 4 good.
We have an explosion in Thyroid problems in the UK.
I think it's part of the same thing.
It must affect everybody

I don't really believe that the statistics are all that realistic. How many girls do you know from your mother's days? In the "olden" days there were girls that were pregnant by the time they were 11. It could be addictives, but then how would explain girls in different parts of the world (the Sudan for example), where processed food isn't a reality but girls have been found to get pregnant as early as 8 or 9?

My daughter started when she was 10, a year ago and its been really hard because of the mood swings. Shes got the body of a 15 year old, periods, breasts and hairy armpits but the mind of the 11 year old that she really is. I'm confused god knows how she must feel. She doesn't talk... just stamps her feet and slams doors a lot! The joys of PMS at 11!

We are becoming a fast food, junk food couch potatoe society. Our children sit inside all evening on the internet or games console..very little excerise is being done. Weigh gain and obesity are become more normal.
I once heard something about 7 stone in weight and above having an effect on periods starting early. It is only a guess but if you know of someone that age that has started their period it might be worth checking their weight.

I am not for sure but I believe it is the food additives and hormones in our food.
One of my daughters, at the age of three yrs old started developing breast. I took her to the pediatrician he said that this was related to hormones in dairy foods.
I started my period at age 9, stopped then started again at 10 and 1/2 yrs. old. This is very difficult to be so young and maturing so fast.

Well i started my Period in 4th grade. And sometimes children just mature faster. My parents thought it was the food since all the foods now are very unnatural. But i was always taller and more mature then other kids in my grade. I think it could be genetics or jus the human race evolving just very slowly
