besides wanting to teach in the acadmic world?

Is there any other use of such degree?

As a PhD in management and a business school professor, I'd say that academia is (to your point) the primary reason to get the degree. Personally, I can't imagine getting the degree for any other reason. It was just too painful!

That said, there are other jobs. As above, there's independent research and/or publication (e.g., books). Also, and importantly, if I decided to leave academia, I could easily get a high level job at a top consulting firm ... Or I could start my own consulting (or expert witness) business, with some prospect of success (having made many useful contacts as both a doctoral student and a faculty member).

Other than academia, a PhD in business can still be used by many companies, depending on what your specialization was in (i.e. general management, marketing, finance, etc.). Another way to go is research, both in the public (government and think tanks) and private sector. Parallel to research is to write, publish your own ideas into books and articles.

You don't USE a degree, you earn it.

The purpose is both knowledge and a verification of that knowledge by an accredited source.
