You know YOU didn't keep your part of the agreement. You had a lease, it terminated, but stated if you stayed, the same terms and conditions applied. EVEN if you had no such lease, under a month to month lease, you are REQUIRED to give 30 days advance notice, in advance of rent due date. So you didn't give adequate notice to landlord you were leaving the place. That's unrelated to all other issues, you didn't fulfill your part of the deal. Plus you are behind in rent, so you're not fulfilling your part of the deal. Giving him an 8 day notice did not fulfill ANY of YOUR obligations. Giving him the required 30 days advance notice (and you knew you were closing soon) would have prevented this mess--you have only yourself to blame. LL is NOT required to replace carpeting. You moved into that "nasty" apartment and stayed there two years although you rented it for only 6 months. He didn't make you. Yes, he should have taken care of the carpet tack issue, and perhaps ceilings. BUT his failure to do so gives you NO rights. You can fight him in court, and it's good to be prepared with photos. Anytime you go to court, your chances are never better than 50/50. However, suggest you consider settling with him rather than a long drawn-out fight. You're in the wrong. Many landlord/tenant judges force a compromise on the parties.

Get a second job. If you just do it for a month or two you'll be able to pay what you owe your landlord and the future will look a bit brighter. Keep your eyes open for a cheaper apartment, probably in this situation it's better to find an apartment that you can share with somebody. Post a question to Yahoo! Answers looking for a cheap apartment in your area. :)
Good luck.

You didn't know what your expenses would be before all this??
Though your efforts seem noble, you may need to do the following:
Get another job--or two. I had to do the same for over a year to get ahead.
Find a place that accepts roomies.
Sell the computer you are using--$$$ Use the libraries or local colleges instead---free.
Many ways to cut the budget in the meantime--got to be persistant and savvy.

You haven't paid your rent, but you are sitting here on the computer, paying for internet service... How about a 2nd job? How about a smaller place? This is not rocket science. Sorry to be brash, but serious situations call for serious measures. Cancel the internet and the cable and stop buying everything but the necessities and get another place.

Move to a cheaper place. Use credit to pay your old landlord and to pay new security deposit.
Revise the way you spend your paycheck. Every time you get a paycheck, put away 10% of it and only spend 90%.
