I'm American film buff, and it seems very sad to me that most Americans just refuse to read subtitles; there are so many great foreign films. I just saw Tsotsi (from South Africa) -- it was absolutely brilliant. Have you seen any good non-English language films recently?

Shameless plug: Check out my Best Foreign Language Film Oscar website to see who has won and been nominated since 1947 (there are three pages altogether). I've be ever so grateful if you'd click on an ad or two, but even if you don't, I hope you enjoy the site! It'll probably never earn me a penny, but it was a labor of love.

I love foreign (non-English language) films because it seems to me that most of these films concentrate more on a story (characters and dialogue) rather than action and special effects, which Hollywood films seem to emphasize.

In these foreign films, I get to see a new country (where I probably will never get to go in real life) and meet characters with a different culture and mindset. Yet, when you come to down to it, I come away with the idea that the movie is really universal - ideas, problems, feelings that we all go through.

Even though, I am in a new world, I remember this is the universal human condition - the movie really brings this idea and feeling home to me.

Choristes, Les (2004)....also known as "The Chorus" It's a French film that was nominated for an Oscar in 2004. Set in 1948, a professor of music, Clement Mathieu, becomes the supervisor at a boarding school for the rehabilitation for minors. Despite a repressive headmaster, Clement tries to transform the students by starting a small choir. It is sooooo good. I always cry at the end, but they're happy tears :)
