Wouldn't it be in the best interest of a business or company to be open on certain holidays?(especially when others are closed?). Is there some sort of benefit to being closed besides intrisic things like happy employees? Unions may demand these days of but what about smaller businesses without union employees? Is there some sort of national legislation that says you cannot be open on certain days?

Some small businesses want to be home with their family and because they can...they close. I was a horticulturist at a large retail establishment. The only holidays that we closed on were Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. We were open all others, everyday. In my experience it seems that if the owner or his family works there...they close, otherwise its only the union places.

Not always but its been My experience that its true

some businesses do stay open, but most close just for the respect of the holiday, and because they don't want to be sued for keeping workers in on important holidays

there's no national legislation to my knowledge, but sometimes you have to keep your employees happy even if that means giving them a day off and losing business. some businesses actually have morals and want to honor certain holidays (ie memorial day, labor day, etc.). god forbid the consumers are ever inconvenienced.

were I work, we are open 365 days...I work in a call center...and I think it's stupid to be open on holidays when it's dead...if anything, I think the company loses money by paying all these people to be there when we aren't even busy...so I think employers that give people holidays off are smart.
