I can't see the point of them I mean there are ways to carry essentials without a bag.
My girlfriend can she hangs her phone from her neck has her keys clipped to her waist and she has her purse either in her hand or a shopping bag. Oh and she keeps a couple of tampons in her pocket.
Nothing else I think I 16 year old girl or indeed adult women would need. So why bother?
I think that teenage girls are trying to make a poor attempt at looking mature but as for older women somebody enlighten me.

Because some of us do not like to look like a human keyring.
Because most clothes do not have any pockets and it is tiring to have to remove your shoe to retrieve your credit card.
Because you do need more than a set of key to survive city jungle.
And because handbags are so great to look at.

They look good, they can carry a lot of stuff - phone/fags/purse/make up - you couldn't go clubbing with a shopping bag or your mobile around your neck! What happens if you wear a skirt with no pockets!!!??? Handbags and shoes are the some of the best things ever invented.

Funny this question, as my husband always complains about the amount of junk I carry about in mine. So lets take a look inside my hand bag.. well what have we here his Mobil, his glasses case, his medication, his address book...Hmm not much room left in here for your stuff Towers I am thinking.
So I will enlighten you...handbags are for carrying men's must have items.
Though in the play the 'Importance of being Ernest' By Oscar Wilde , THE HANDBAG WAS TO KEEP A BABY IN...very funny play.

well since i have a 16 yearold.. i can say i do NOT use a handbag to attempt to look mature. hahahha. i dont like having anything in my pockets except my cell phone.
so my purse is an easy way to carry all the things i need..
my wallet
lip gloss
eye drops
bandaids
body spray
camera
i like to call my purse the "mini 7 11"
haha.

There are other things I like to carry around, personally. As a guy, you probably wouldn't get it, but in addition to all those, I carry a checkbook, eye drops, lotion, chapstick, pens, etc. And why does your girlfriend carry all that stuff plus a purse? Get a bigger bag and put that all in it. Plus, what if your tampons managed to work their way out of your pocket? You'd be trailing tampons and everybody would be laughing at you.

Lack of pockets in womens dresses, pants, etc.
Many men only need a pocket comb but women with long need a brush that won't fit in a pocket.
Pads and tampons can get crushed or dirtied easier in a pocket and become unsanitary before we even get a chance to use them.
Many men end up saying "Honey, I can't fit this in my pocket, can you put it in your purse?"
Carrying snacks for kids, husbands, etc.
Women are often more organized than men and a purse is our portable office with address book, business cards, pens, note paper, phone, check book, wallet, umbrella, flash light, keys.....try carrying all of that in your pockets.
Men have their own purses.......they're call briefcases, or back packs.

Everything I need for the day is in my bag. Wallet, phone, a book that I'm reading, papers, a notebook, gloves, lipbalm, musli (not usually, just today), stuff to take to the dry cleaners and my keys.
I wear skirts without pockets and besides, I couldn't really fit all of this stuff into a pocket anyway without having the Michelin man look about it!

Hmm this sounds a little suspect. A girl who doesnt carry a handbag... is she your invisible friend? My handbag though small can carry both a woman's wallet plus a mans ditto, a woman's keys plus a man's ditto, and sometimes a man's phone and organiser... why do women carry handbags?> Cos men love to be macho and they wont. Send me a man who will carry a man-bag with all my gear, and I'll marry the bugger.

Now, say I'm wearing a tank top and skirt. It's a hot summer day, no jacket. The skirt obviously doesn't have any pockets. Where am I going to keep this stuff? Yes, these are not all NEEDED, but we WANT this kind of stuff. It helps us keep everything together. Now don't judge, ok?

Hmmm, if handbags are not needed, why is my husband always asking me to put in my bag the checkbook and PDA and anything else he has no space in his pockets for?
Most clothes for women don't have pockets and I need contact lens case, eye drops for the contacts, spare pair of glasses in case I have to take the contacts out, sunglasses, wallet, kleenex, nail file, lipstick, shopping list, etc.
I wish I didn't have to lug that heavy purse around, but I do need that stuff.
