I worked as a clinical chemist and I have taught chemistry at the college level.
In the UK, pharmacists are called Chemists. In the USA and elsewhere, chemists specialize in working with chemicals, transforming one chemical into another. There are many branches and different levels.
Clinical chemists work in the medical field, using their knowledge to help doctors determine illness by analyzing blood, urine and other body fluids and tissue samples.
Toxicologists specialize in analyzing specimens for drugs and drug metabolites. These chemists also deal with many environmental issues.
Some chemists design and manufacture drugs for the drug industry.
Others work with petroleum to convert crude oil into useful liquids.
Plastics and polymers are another area.
Academically, chemists can be separated into a variety of sub-disciplines. See the second site below:

There are a vast number of jobs for a chemist. At the moment I'm working in a pharmaceutical company in the Quality Department. Other jobs are researchers, chemical and process engineers. Chemists are also employed in the sales department. Why? Because if you were a doctor for example you'd feel more comfortable about buying a product if a person with a scientific background was talking to you.
There are environmental chemists who study the atmosphere, water and soil.
Its far easier to find a job as a chemist rather then a biologist or physicist

Most work as analytical chemists, many of those in quality control, many of the rest as organic chemists making small batches of specialty products.

You can go into analytical chemistry - for example analysing specimens for an environmental organisation.
Industrial chemistry - quality control within an organisation ensuring that their product meets pre-determined standards.
Food chemistry - chemistry of foods.
These are just to name a few. Go to a university where courses in chemistry are offered, and they should be able to show you career pathways for chemists.
