I f I have a silver chain?

can I get the length shortened for free if i gave them the rest of the silver about 6 inches off?

For the most part silver is not expensive enough to go through all that ;just buy a shorter chain...there are usually carts in malls that sell sterling silver chain by the inch.
On the other hand you may be able to get someone at a good jewlery store to shorten it for you rather cheaply...
