How bad is it to have rats living in your household or workcenter? Is it ok to set traps to eliminate them from your living environment? Or is it best to let them be to spawn and spread disease and pestilence? This question is posed in light of a recent event at my workplace: A rat was spotted in the area...a trap was set...a rat was caught and killed...someone protested that rats are not disease ridden vermin and should be left alone to live wherever and however they please. We invaded their living space (BTW I work in a palace in Baghdad), so we should allow them to live without threats from bait laden traps. Please help us see the light on this subject!!! Thanks!

Using mouse traps as pest control is the traditional way to exterminate rodent infestations at home. Recent changes on how people view the act of treating animals even pest may become a problem for you. The old snap traps are seen as violent and inhumane these days. It does not also help with sanitation and disposal issues when a rat dies from the trap. These traps do not guarantee prevention of more infestations in the future. Using rat barriers is a better option. This Tumblr post gives out more details on the advantages of using a rat barrier.

First of all cleanliness hlep prevent rats from invading your space...such as the way you keep your food and garbage. At some point one has to draw the line of co living with rats..since our immune system cannot tolerate the diseases that they carry.. Perhaps keep a couple of very active cats around would help deter the vermine from invading.
