On Friday evening, my wife noticed a huge Hornet's nest in a flowering crab tree in our front yard that is bigger then a football! We have sprayed it with Hornet's killer both Friday and Saturday night, (using two full cans each time) but they are still coming in and out of that sucker at a fast rate! I really don't want to have to pay for an exterminator to remove it, because money is very tight for us right now. Anyone know how to get rid of such a thing, without either of us getting stung? (Again, serious answers only! I lost a good friend to getting stung by Hornets many years ago, and I do not find any jokes about it to be funny!).

The hornet killer needs to be sprayed in the nest hole to get them.
If its hard to spray them use a garden hose on the nest first.
Hose from 20 feet away and only for a few seconds at a time, go inside and wait a half hour then check, if they are not all over the place use the killer spray.

Hornets build their nests from chewed wood fiber, which is used to make hollow layers, like an onion, around the attachment point. They enter and exit the nest from an opening at the lower end.

If left undisturbed they will go about their business of building their nest and capturing small grasshoppers, flies and bees.

It is usually not necessary to destroy a hornet nest. When their flight path is overhead and the nest is away from curious children, hornets can be left alone.

If a nest is too close for comfort, an aerosol Wasp & Hornet spray can be used from a safe position after dusk, when the insects are in their nest.

I know you said you don't want to spend money but...it may be best to protect yourself and your family if you can.
Contact your local town/citygovernment and see if they have anyone who could remove it.
OR
If you have a farm agency like Cornell Cooperative Extension, they may have someone who would remove it for a very nomial charge.
OR
If there is a college (or highschool) near where you live, perhaps a teacher there would be interested in it.

One way to get rid of the nest is to wait until it gets very cold and then remove it. Unfortunately you will probably have to wait for that though.
Good luck.

My parents had the same problem. The hornet sprays wouldn't work. What my dad did(it's dangerous, though) is get some gasoline on it an burn it. It worked, but as I mentioned, it's a bit dangerous. Good luck to you, hornets are bad news.

Dress properly #1. You could try a large CO2 fire extingusiher if you can get close enough and freeze it. But have someone backing you up with hornet spray. You could also try soaking it with grill lighter fluid and then light it on fire, but have a hose ready. A dicey situation no mater what you do without a professional.

Im with you , they must die..
If you have a water hose that will reach it and an attachment like you would use to wash your car with , one that mixes the soap and the water , you can spray them with soapy water. I use soapy water to kill wasps every year on my balcony. They drop dead as soon as it hits them.. I hope that helps. And good luck , I have been stug by them before and it sure dose hurt.

I would find a way to afford the professional. They can fog and bag it and you don't need to worry. Does it get cold where you live. You could wait until the temps drop and they should become inactive.
