The smartest culture we know of before our time was the Egyptians and from them we can learn a great deal. They were obsessed with death, probably because they loved life so much and wanted to extend it after death, but they had all the misconceived notions of death, like the Egyptian Book of the Dead. We are lucky today to not have to write our own book on death or come up with our our preconceived notions about what death is like (we would certainly be wrong and suffer an eternity for it) because we have the Bible, a scientifically proved book who speaks of the perfect man who lived, died and overcame death through his resurrection, thus shattering any fear you might have of no life after death. Life it seems is the preparation for eternity, and doing good works by FAITH in Jesus for Jesus, so that you will reap all the benefits in the next life as well as living this one to the fullest. And as for the guy who said do whatever you want and don't listen to God, he is the same dude who does not believe in the Ten Commandments, the laws by which our country was founded, the laws of the Lord that keep us from Evil. Imagine if there were no ten commandments, no laws against murder, what then? There obviously has to be some guidelines, some master book for living or we would all perish.

The truth is, there is no meaning. You are here because your parents felt the biological urge to reproduce.
While many people find the idea of life without a higher purpose depressing, I think of it as freeing. You don't have to worry about paying lip service to some higher being, or live your life in any certain way. You get to do whatever makes you happy.
You can choose your own meaning in life.

At a basic level, the meaning of life is to live or to survive. But it doesn't stop there. Every living organism also participates in ensuring the long term survival of its group, community, or society, and its species. And beyond that, every living organism also participates in evolution - giving rise to new species and new types of groups, communities, and societies, that are more evolved, and more capable of surviving. So, ultimately, life is about the long term survival and proliferation of this chain reaction, called life, that started with the first living organism and continues until today.
But this is only half the answer. Life is also about "reflection", or discovering the meaning of life itself. As evolution leads to more and more intelligent species, they are more and more capable of reflection, and this process will also continue until some living organism in the future finds the true and complete meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

If you read Genesis, God created man/woman in his image - God is Love and He wants to bless others. I believe our purpose is to love God first and love others second. Bring glory to God in all you do. The New Testament says we were created to do good works and bring glory to God.
