I've heard that there are problems with them. Should I go to Citi or INGdirect instead?

I have used HSBC for the past couple of months and have not had any problems. I guess it depends on how often you need the money you will be putting in the account. HSBC has a $3 fee for trasferring from HSBC to another bank, but it is free when transferring from another bank to HSBC. I would suggest HSBC if you want to put money away and will not be tapping in to it with a debit card or making weekly or monthly withdrawals.

If you are going to withdraw money often, I would use Citi simply because of the number of ATM machines they have nation wide.

Most of the online banks are the same except for rates. ING is the most popular because they have done the most advertising.
Here are the rates of 8/28
