Hazing is often ritualistic test, which may constitute harassment, abuse or humiliation with requirements to perform meaningless tasks; sometimes as a way of initiation into a social group.

WHAT ACTIVITIES CAN BE CONSIDERED HAZING?

* Marking or branding

* Requiring the carrying of items such as rocks, helmets, books, paddles, etc.

* Preventing/restricting normal personal hygiene

* Treating a person in a degrading manner

* Causing indecent exposure

* Requiring uncomfortable, ridiculous, or embarrassing dress

* Preventing/restricting class attendance or sleep

* Requiring New Members to practice periods of silence

* Dropping food (eggs, grapes, liver, etc.) into the mouths of new members

* Forcing alcoholic beverages on an individual who does not wish to drink or who has no wish to drink the quantity provided

* Required eating of raw onions, spoiled food or the drinking of any liquids not normally used

These are only a few of the many activities that can be construed as hazing. Some activities are easily categorized as hazing. Others may not be so easily classified. If you are not sure, consider the following questions:

Is this activity an educational experience?

Will this activity increase the respect for the organization?

Would you be willing to allow parents or University officials to witness the activity?

Does the activity have value in and of itself?
