I have both an iPod and a CFGear MP3 player.
Good things about the iPod:
1) Access to everything on iTunes
2) Holds more songs than I can ever imagine listening to.
3) Looks cool.
Good things about the CFGear MP3 player:
1) Tiny!
2) Plugs right in, you don't need the iTunes interface to put songs on it.
3) Can be used as a sandard flash drive to hold other files.
4) CHEAP!
I think both are grat depending on what you are using them for.

An ipod basically is an mp3 player ,but becuase apple heavily advertises it the other mp3 players fall into obscurity. You have a large choice of players availble on the market right now, it all depends on what you want it for.companies like Creative,Cowon, iriver, toshiba, samsung and Sandisk all make very good mp3 players. In regards to ipods you really are paying just for the name.Of all the players i have tried or owned i can honestly say that price/feature wise you get the least for what you paid for.there will apple fans who say that you are paying for quality but
ask those who have had problems with defective batteries and scratched screens (and there are many) and they will tell you otherwise.here is are some feature you should look for when buying a player.
1. good battery life (15 hours + is the standard)
2. built in fm radio( when you want listen to the radio, instead of your mp3's)
3.allot of them come with voice recorders-really helpful for students, people who like to make personal memos
4.look for the microsoft "play for sure " logo, it means they are
compatible with all music services so you have a choice where
you can download your music from.
5.if you are thinking of buying a player with video capabilities
make sure you know the battery life for video
for eg ipods have 2 hours, creative vision:m has 4.5 and the cowon A2 has 8
6.its good to check out review sites on the net such as cnet.com
or dapreview.net to get a professional opinion on the models you are interested in.
here are examples of excellent players
creative Vision:m ,creative V,Cowon xl5, toshiba gigabeat,iriver clix,Samsung YEPP YP-Z5
I personally have a Creative vision:m and i am very happy with it
and it outpreforms the equivalant ipod

I am not an iPod fan. The bass quality is not the best by any means. I love Rio products, I bought a Carbon and it is one of the best players regarding sound quality (next to Creative) that there is. Sadly, Rio went out of business last year, so they are no more. SanDisk is going to be my next choice, flash (you don't have to worry about hard drives failing), and video support on the e200 series.

Ipods hold alot more songs. They also hold Podcasts, TV Shows, Moive Trailers, and Music Videos. And MP3s hold like 500 I think.

ipods are not the best they are just plain easy to use but gives alot of trouble...so i brough the sandisk sansa 140 1gb mp player and up to now i think its the best...i can drag and drop the songs or just choose the music folder of the mp3 player to send the songs right to the folder, although it has fm-am radio equalizer 3 band and can store pictures too.
