The latest info on the width of the Milky Way is about 160k to 180k light years across. So.... the closest answer to that is 9k. => D. 90000.

But the math way works too. 9e20/1e16 = 9e4 or 90000 years.

Do not feel dumb. Most people know that the distance traveles can be calculated by taking the velocity of the traveler times the duration of the travel: D = V * T

This means that the Time can be found from: T = D / V

You state that the Distance = 9 x 10^20 meters and the Velocity = 1 x 10^16 meters/year.

D = 9 x 10^20 meters / 1 x 10^16 meters/year

= 9/1 x 10^20/10^16 years

= 9 x 10^4 = 90,000 years

The answer is (d).

Time of travel = distance divided by velocity.

In your problem, distance = diameter of the Milky Way, and velocity = light velocity. You should be able to get it now:

T=9*10^20 m / 10^16 m/yr = 9*10^4 yr

Gee, man, you got all the numbers staring right at you.

You have distance (9e20 m) and speed (1e16 m/year), you simply divide one by the other:

9e20/1e16 = 9e4 or 90000 years.
