First of all, i'm a teacher's assistant and apparently i'm supposed to help out the students that are in that class. Well sometimes the teacher (which i've known since last year) won't have anything for me to do, and if a student asks me to help them i go and help them. Then, she'll come over to where i'm helping out a student and ask the student what do they need when i'm trying to help them out and i know how to help them out and stuff, but everytime one of her students tries talking to me or asks for help, she'll help them and have me do some work that she'll give me right then. It seems like she's jealous or sumthin when i talk to a student in there. Why is that? Oh yeah, and she gives me more work than her other assistants, and she laughs about it.

It is very difficult for us to give you a good answer to your question without knowing more about the specific situation. For example, are you hired to work with all kids in the class or only with certain kids? Are you hired to give academic support or support only with physical issues such as mobility?

Can you possibly talk to this teacher and tell her how you feel? Ask her what you should do when there isn't any specific work for you to do, since you want to help and you like to be busy. Suggest that you realize she is very busy and there are a lot of kids who need help, so could she suggest a list of things that you can work on when students don't seem to need your help.

That might be a start and might help get things sorted out between you. I hope these thoughts help. Best of luck with it.

You should clarify that you're a STUDENT who is assisting as a class and not a PAID assistant. I think you're confusing all of us.

My suggestion would be for you to tell her exactly what you told us. Tell her you've noticed that she comes behind you when you're helping a student and that it makes you feel inept. Ask her if there's anything specific she'd like you to work on so that you can help the students better. This will still make her feel like she's the boss (which she technically is) but will also let her know that you're on to her. Our assistant has already confronted one of the teachers about how she treats her. I couldn't say if she was right about it or not, but she got her point across from the start. Good luck!

If I had an aide with as poor grammar and spelling as you apparently have, then I wouldn't want the aide confusing--helping--my students, nor would I appreciate having an aide whose maturity level is on a par with the students. I'd suggest you don't keep your day job, but go back to school as a student.

Say, Oh, I'm sorry am I just supposed to be observing you and not assisting you?

Go to the principal and tell what is going on and how you feel. When she prevents you from helping other children, she is taking away valuable experience that you need to be a teacher.

she is definitely jealous of you ! She may see that the students respond better to you. It's not your fault they may respect you more than her.
Talk to her about you feelings,if that fails talk to the principal.Ask if you can help in another class.
Keep doing your job ! Many times teachers aides are not respected or recognized !
Our school treats the aides like regular teachers.

many teachers (and people) are control freaks. they like to be the ones to dictate everything that happens in their classroom. and they feel that anything that happens without their consent is a threat to them. many teachers who have student aides will never utilize them because of this. maybe try transferring to another teacher or perhaps confront the teacher and ask her why she does that. approach it in a nice way like asking if you are doing something wrong that she wants corrected.

There could be many reasons why she does this. Why not sit down with her and explain to her what you see is going on. Maybe she doesn't even realize what she is doing. And if talking to her doesn't work, go to someone above her and try to resolve your issues that way.

Maybe she is afraid your punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and grammar issues will taint the students.
