Because of the present we forget the past. Andre Agassi is our minds, so we forget just how good players like Borg, McEnroe, Connors, Becker, Wilander, even Courier and of course, Sampras were.

Sampras won 7 Wimbledon titles, the US Open at age 19 and 33. That just shows his complete dominance of the game bar the clay courts.

And we must remember he won his 14 Slams, in an era where Becker, Courier, Agassi and others were playing. That he dominated them, shows the amount of talent he had.

But today is Agassi's day. The man won 7 Slams, including on all 4, something not even Pete, Borg or McEnroe did. So that is an achievement. He would have more had he not played in Sampras' era. But he sure gave Pete a fight and to win 7 Slams is amazing.

Look around today, except Federer, which other player has won that magic figure of 3 Slams, that separates the greats from the good?

Andre Agassi will always be a giant. Comparisons between the two are not necessary.

Someone else expressed this better than I will. This is Agassi's day - deservedly - and he was a great player, but Sampras has to go down as the better player overall --the record books tell you that.

I would give Agassi these "advantages" however:

He won all 4 majors (though Sampras still won 14 to Andre's 8)
He was the more popular ambassador of tennis
Andre had a better Davis Cup record
To me, Andre had the more interesting career, and life.
I rooted for Andre in their head-to-head matches.

May be if Agassi wold concentrate ONLY on the tennis life as Sampras, then he could be compared with Sampras! Although Agassi is also one of the best players of this game!

Sampras by far. Love Agassi but Pete was amazing. The only one that could come close to Pete is Roger Federer.

Well if we look at the past I guess Sampras, I mean to say that when he won his 14th grandslam title he was 31, and was brilliant server and volleyer, and as we know it is too difficult to serve and volley these days.

But if we look tody I guess, Agassi his proving to be a good fighter and a perfect baseliner, so I guess Andre has proved himself, but got late

Sampras. I like them both but he won more head to head and more majors than anyone in the history of the game. I do like Andre's personality better though.
