In Collins dictionary it's defined as "young working class person who dresses in casual clothes". Something like those youngsters wearing tracksuits and trainers, lots of bling-bling and make up (if girls). But it's probably more about your background than how you look, 'cos a chav can put on a suit but once they open their mouth, you know they're chavs. It's not easy to explain, it's like "posh", you can't really explain what "posh" means, can you? You can think of chav being the opposite of posh, but I'm not sure if that is correct.

It depends. They're are lots of variations. Daniella Westbrook (the junkie who used to play Sam Mitchell in Eastenders) was classed as a Chav once because she was seen wearing top to toe Burberry and dressed her child identically. This type of Chav is someone who has more money than sense, dresses just to impress other people and flaunt their wealth and has no real sense of style. Coleen McCloughlin and other footballers wives are sometimes thought of as Chavs for wearing rubbish looking clothes like Juicy Couture velour tracksuits (which look rubbish really, but they only wear them because everyone knows they're expensive and it's really sad because they all dress alike. Like they're trying to fit into some club).

Another type of Chav is someone who is poorer. Council estate thugs are often thought of as Chavs, wearing big gold chains and loads of rings and designer t-shirts. This type of Chav wants to look like they're rich, but are failing miserably.

Britney Spears is sometimes thought of as a Chav, when she wears big trucker caps and trampy clothes. So, as you can see the definition of a Chav is very complicated.

A Chav is someone who is totally into designer clothes, but has no sense of style. They wear odd outfits but just wear the clothes for the designer name. They are also clones, they just follow trends and people who they wana be to fit in.

And there I thought that it was only an old codger like me who didn't know. First heard it used by a youth about 6 months ago and put my ignorance down to loss of touch with the younger generation. Mind you there seem to be a lot of words they use that I'm uncertain how to take!! So I'll look forward to your answers. lol (Ah there's another I'd never heard of until starting Answers!! lol)
